It turns out a new menace named Mesmero is using a machine designed by Magneto to send out a call to latent mutants and have them come to him, to be indoctrinated into his soon to be (at least he hopes) world conquering mutant army. Bobby runs into one of the people who has been mesmerized, and we get to the introduction of Lorna Dane, who many X-Fans will probably be familiar with. She doesn't know how she got there, so Bobby takes her back to his apartment to help her figure out what to do next. You know, if I'd blacked out and suddenly was in a city I didn't recognize, I would probably not immediately just go home with the first person who offers help, but as we will soon see, Lorna does not make the greatest decisions.
Before the X-Men can attack though, the true leader of the Demi-men arrives: Magneto (Dude just refuses to stay dead. He follows Disney rules: Was there a body? Then no, he ain't dead).
While Lorna is taking a nap (seriously girl, you just go to bed in a strange man's apartment? Do you have no sense of self preservation?!), the rest of the X-Men arrive, and all except Beast leave to try to find the villains. Beast is making a mini-Cerebro that will pinpoint more accurately at a short range. Lorna wakes up as he is finishing and he realizes she is a mutant (also that she has green hair naturally).
The rest of the team shows back up after having fought some of Mesmero's Demi-men army, and they set off together, leaving Iceman to protect Lorna. Unfortunately, it isn't enough, as Mesmero arrives and paralyzes Iceman with his powers and captures them both and takes them to a base in the desert. The X-Men then attack Mesmero's San Francisco base and get captured (The X-Men get captured a LOT).
Mesmero imprisons Iceman as he works to use a machine to awaken Lorna's powers, awakening her strong magnetic powers and referring to her as "M-II", Daughter of Magneto. The X-Men break free, and Mesmero, with Lorna under his control orders her to attack... except surprise she was just playing along. She unleashes a mass magnetic attack that throws all the Demi-men around the room. The strain was too much for her and she passes out.

A huge fight ensues, and eventually, Magneto is put on the ropes, but Lorna saves him and it forces the X-Men to have to escape. Basically, Lorna has decided "yeah he is an evil asshole but he is still my dad". Seriously, her bad decisions know no bounds.
Once safely away, Cyclops decides to sideline Iceman for the remainder of the mission, as Bobby has feelings for Lorna that could interfere. There is a fight (verbal one, no fists, eyeblasts, or snowballs thrown), and Iceman basically says fuck you and leaves. Next we see a new villain, Erik the Red attacking Mesmero's base. He beats their outer defenses and insists on meeting Magneto. There he says that he wishes to join his forces.
X-tra Notes: This story fully abandons the X-Men separating, and from this point forward they will only work together, and everything about the FBI ordered separation will fail to be mentioned ever again. Thank god. Also, starting with #50, we get the first appearance of the now iconic X-Men logo that will carry on until the early 2000s!
