Uncanny X-Men #60-61: The Most Evil Villain In All Of Literature

The first introduction of another classic X-Villain! Havok (Alex) was injured pretty bad in the last comic in the climax. Scott contacts a doctor with connections to Xavier to help him, not trusting public medical care as the X-Men are still possibly wanted. That doctor was Karl Lykos. They leave Alex with him and we learn that Lykos, due to something that happened as a child involving the Arctic and some pterosaurs (do I smell the Savage Land?) left him with a desire to feed on the energy of others. And he thinks mutants could give him an extra special high.

He is correct as it turns him into a ptero-man and he decides to name himself after the most evil thing he can think of, the villain of the Lord of the Rings, Sauron (wow, what a fucking nerd). He fights the X-Men and injures Angel.

We learn more about his sad background, where he saved a girl from the pterosaurs and they grew up together and he fell in love with her but her dad is a classist prick, so Lykos wasn't good enough for her. Even as a doctor. She didn't care and tried to be with him anyway. Asshole dad intervenes.

Lykos as Sauron attacks the father, the X-Men (minus Angel who is resting) save him, Lykos realizes he almost hurt his love, and runs off to an abandoned cabin in the Arctic circle that belonged to his father. The X-Men follow the girl there as she leads them to him, and he jumps off a cliff to prevent himself from hurting her.

X-tra Notes: Sauron is a iconic villain, even if he is ultimately very silly, and has nothing to do with the Mutant/Humanity tensions. He's just a guy who feeding off mutants turns into a super-powerful ptero-man. But for some reason I really like him. Also, Thomas is continuing to kill it. This one is a fantastic read.
