Turns out, there is about to be an ALIEN INVASION from a race called the Z'Nox. Apparently, they are an alien race of conquerors that have evolved past having fluffy feelings. They ask how Alex and Lorna know this and reveal: Professor X told them and is still alive and he is here right now! So now we get some retconning. The Xavier who died was really Changeling, who was dying of cancer and wanted to go out doing something good. Xavier needed to hide away and prepare for the Z'Nox invasion he knew was coming, so let Changeling take his place as the leader of the X-Men.
And proceeded to tell no one else what was going on. Cause this is Xavier of course. He trains up the X-Men for this latest threat, and then they execute their plan. Basically, Xavier connects to all the good people in the entire world Telepathically, he then through a convoluted plan involving the powers of multiple X-Men he connects it to all the Z'Nox. Facing good fluffy feelings, they retreat and the world is saved.
But Xavier has fallen into a coma from stressing his powers!
X-tra Notes: This issue is weird and very rushed. It could have been a multi-parter, but I think they saw the writing on the wall regarding how much longer they had to work on the comic, as sales had gotten really bad (which is sad, cause the time leading up to this was actually the best that the X-Men have ever been). Additionally, for some reason this comic was written by a different writer and not Thomas, instead it was written by Dennis O'Neil. I don't know if this was due to Thomas being busy with other projects, or if O'Neil was intended to take over if sales picked back up or what, but Thomas was back by the next comic.
