At first they are useless, but one night when the dormitory catches on fire, he has to jump out the window and finds he can fly with them. Hearing the other kids in trouble, he runs to get a rope from the drama club setting materials, and grabs a white robe and a long blond wig to try to hide who he is while he saves them, which leads to them calling him an Angel.
Months later over the summer, he is working as a solo super hero as the "Avenging Angel" and stops a robbery and recovers the vial that was stolen, he plans to take it back in the morning, but Cyclops and Iceman meet him at his apartment. They ask him to join them, he gets mad cause he doesn't need anyone else, attacks them, knocks out Iceman, and then Xavier contacts him mentally to tell him the vial is dangerous! It will explode if they don't make it super cold.
With Iceman unconscious, Warren flies straight up to reach cold enough air to deactivate the vial, nearly dying in the process, and then agrees that he isn't wise enough to operate on his own, and joins the team.

X-tra Notes: I liked this one. Warren immediately deciding "Hey, I can be a superhero" is a pretty great reaction. He also has a lot of desire to be recognized for it. Also: His costume is legit better than his current costume. It isn't great, but damn if it isn't better than his current abomination.
Also, this is the last of the backup stories in the original run. Jean doesn't get one since her initial meeting with Xavier is in the first comic (at least at this point).
