Uncanny X-Men #150: Magneto vs The Moral Responsibility Of Having Killed A Child

We have a huge double issue! X-Men vs Magneto! Also, this one is really the defining moment that turned Magneto from stereotypical moustache twirling villain, to the more complicated character he became.

Anyway, we start with Magneto addressing all the world governments throughout the world. His ultimatum: Completely disarm and cede all power to me, or I'll destroy all of you. He then tells Cyclops that he will bring about a new age of prosperity for everyone. Admittedly mutants will be on top, and he will be on top of that, but he intends to solve world hunger, war, etc. for all.

He also asks Scott about Jean since Lee is there, and expresses condolences for her death, which kind of pisses off Scott. Magneto is angered by the idea that he didn't care (though to be fair, can't blame Cyclops for thinking that considering their last meeting), and talks about how he has lived through the death of so many and understands grief.

Anyway, a Soviet sub attacks with nuclear missiles. Magneto easily throws them into the ocean, then retaliates by sinking the sub with the full crew onboard. Then he shows he can in fact use his machines combined with his powers to destroy any city in the world he wants. He uses it on a Soviet city after giving plenty of time for them to evacuate.

Nearby, the X-Men coming back from Antarctica are searching for Cyclops and Lee after learning they were shipwrecked. The Blackbird though gets caught in a freak bit of magnetic field from Magnetos powers and is thrown into the ocean, our heroes make it to the island where they meet up with Lee and Cyclops who point out they are all without powers.

They decide they will fight Magneto anyway, and set about to destroy his plans. Part of the team, including Wolverine, with his non-mutant claws, and Nightcrawler with his natural agility and tail that can't be turned off, go to destroy Magneto's machines. Lee, Kitty, and Ororo instead head to try to find the computers to turn them off.

Along the way Ororo finds Magneto sleeping and thinks of slitting his throat, but angsts about it too long. Magneto wakes and attacks, sending her out the window.

They destroy the machine, but Magneto shows up to just put it back together again with his powers, and catch them all, minus Ororo who is thought dead. Ororo destroys the computers and all their powers come back. A huge fight later, Kitty runs and destroys the machines with her phasing powers, and Magneto attacks her. His attack knocks her unconscious, and thinking he killed her, Magneto realizes she is just a child and is stunned.

He reveals how he was a child in Auchwitz, and that he has become what he hated. He leaves Kitty with Ororo, and they discover she is not dead.

X-Tra Notes: This issue is a HUGE deal. This establishes a huge, key part of Magneto's background that retroactively makes him an incredibly more nuanced villain (remember, all the mentions before this of his background as a holocaust survivor in this readthrough were from the Classic Reprints, which weren't printed at this point). It is also just a good issue for several of the individual characters. Seriously one of the best issues of the comic so far.
